Ilembula Institute of Health and Allied Sciences (IIHAS) is a faith-based health training institution owned by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania — South Diocese (ELCT-SD). Located in the Southern Highland Zone, Njombe Region, Wanging'ombe District at Ilembula Ward within the premises of Ilembula Lutheran Hospital, IIHAS is situated 735 km from Dar es Salaam and 5 km from the Halali–Ilembula junction along the Dar es Salaam to Lusaka international road.

IIHAS began in 1963 as the Ilembula Nurses and Midwives Training School (INMTS). In May 2002, it was renamed Ilembula School of Nursing and Midwifery after being fully registered by NACTVET. In September 2003, the school started offering diploma courses, with the first cohort graduating in 2007. In November 2014, it achieved accreditation and officially became Ilembula Institute of Health and Allied Sciences (IIHAS), enabling the institute to expand its scope beyond Nursing and Midwifery. The Clinical Medicine Department was recognized in 2018.

Our history

The institute started in 1963 as the Ilembula Nurses and Midwives Training School (INMTS), owned by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania — South Diocese (ELCT-SD). In 2002, it was renamed Ilembula School of Nursing and Midwifery after NACTVET registration. Diploma courses began in 2003, with the first graduates in 2007. In 2014, the school achieved accreditation and became IIHAS, allowing expansion into additional health training programmes. The Clinical Medicine Department was recognized in 2018.

Our achievements

IIHAS is fully accredited by NACTVET following reaffirmation accreditation held in 2020. The institute currently offers two diploma-level programmes: Nursing & Midwifery and Clinical Medicine. IIHAS is governed by the IIHAS Advisory Board and has produced numerous clinical officers, nurses, and midwives serving healthcare institutions across Tanzania. The institute is situated within the premises of Ilembula Lutheran Hospital, providing students direct access to clinical training.
