Programs offered at IIHAS

IIHAS currently conducts two training programmes: Nursing & Midwifery and Clinical Medicine, both at diploma level (NTA Level 4–6). Each programme combines theoretical knowledge, practical training, and community engagement. Programme duration is three years. The institute has a capacity of 100 applicants per NTA level per programme.

Diploma in Clinical Medicine

Three-year diploma programme equipping students with essential medical knowledge and clinical skills. The Clinical Medicine Department was recognized in 2018 by NACTVET. Students undergo rigorous training combining classroom instruction with practical rotations at Ilembula Lutheran Hospital and partner facilities.

Diploma in Nursing & Midwifery

Three-year diploma programme preparing skilled nurses and midwives. This programme has been offered since 1963 when the institute was founded as Ilembula Nurses and Midwives Training School. Diploma courses began in 2003, with the first cohort graduating in 2007. Training covers medical-surgical nursing, maternal & child health, mental health, pharmacology, and nursing management.

Entry requirements & qualifications
Entry requirements (both programmes)
  • Direct Entry: Four (4) passes in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and one pass in either Mathematics or English in CSEE
  • Equivalent Qualification: Technician Certificate at NTA Level 5
  • Application fee: TSh 15,000 (online via NACTVET) or TSh 25,000 (other modes)
  • Applicants must ensure names and index numbers match their secondary school records
  • Programme duration: 3 years for both Nursing & Midwifery and Clinical Medicine

  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine (NTA Level 4–6)
  • Diploma in Nursing & Midwifery (NTA Level 4–6)
  • Fully accredited by NACTVET (reaffirmation accreditation 2020)
  • Recognized by Tanzania Nursing and Midwifery Council (TNMC) and relevant professional councils
  • Eligible for national registration in professional healthcare councils

How to apply
Application & admission procedure

Follow these steps to apply for admission at IIHAS:

  1. 1 Apply online through the Central Admission System via the NACTVET website, or download the admission form from our website, or collect a hard copy from the IIHAS registry office.
  2. 2 Ensure you have adequate information about the programme of your choice. Applicants' names and index numbers must match their secondary school records.
  3. 3 Pay the application fee: TSh 15,000 (online mode) or TSh 25,000 (other modes of application).
  4. 4 Upon selection, pay tuition fees to the CRDB account (0150472869400, ELCT.SD-ILEMBULA SCHOOL OF NURSING). Bring the bank pay-in slip on reporting day.
  5. 5 Report to the institute on the designated date with: original CSEE result slip and copy, birth certificate copy, and 1 passport-size photo.
  6. 6 Each student must join or show evidence of membership in the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) or similar fund at the time of registration.
  7. 7 Attend the orientation programme during the week preceding the beginning of the new academic year.
